Setting goal by brainwashing
This topic today that I am going
to discuss is a little sensitive. I have not read much about it but I have
experienced this first hand. So, let’s get to it. Goals are different for
different people. There are various things that people want to do. Most people
start their journey towards their goal by choosing one of the four fields in
school: medical, non-medical, commerce or humanities. The order in which these
courses are stated doesn’t indicate their importance. I believe that all these
courses are equal and each one offers a different type of learning. But let’s
not get into that.
The main idea I want to share
with this post is the fact that till now a lot of students don’t get to choose
their goal. Its either decided by their relatives or by their parents who
decide what their kids would do. This I feel is brainwashing to an extent.
Although, the times have changed now. Students now go for career counselling
and find out what they can do as per the skill sets they have acquire in their
life. But this is a very small percentage of the total students.
Parents consciously or
unconsciously decide and sometimes manipulate their kids into choosing a career
path. Why do they do so? There can be many reasons. Firstly, since they are
obviously more experienced in life, they know the safe options and they advise
their children to opt for those. There is nothing wrong with that approach but
safe option isn’t always the correct option. No one achieved greatness by just
being safe. Secondly, they want their children to fulfil the goals that they
could never achieve which is downright wrong. Such decision should not be
forced upon a child. Because every child is emotionally attached her or his
parent and will do anything to fulfil the goals of their parents in this case
even if it doesn’t make her or him happy. Thirdly, it could be due to the lineage.
For example, a family which has a generation of government employees promotes
their children to go for government jobs only and rarely they would let their
children even think of doing a business. Not only because they don’t want them
to but sometimes they are just too afraid to venture into a different field.
And there could be other reasons also.
I believe that one should be free
to choose her or his own goal. And yes, this change can’t be brought in a day
or a two. But it can be done. And it should be done. A lot of people today are
changing their fields every day. Engineers are the best example. A lot of
people are switching jobs just to find a job which excites or interests them. A
lot of people are dropping out of colleges. All of these switching and changing
might be good for the person doing it but all of this wasting an opportunity
and a position for a person who actually wanted to do that.
To improve this condition, a lot
of changes are necessary. The education system should be modified, the parents
and children should be educated and the fees of the career consultants should
be subsidized for people who can’t afford it. These are just a few things that
can be done. A lot more needs to be done. And of course, it won’t happen
quickly but it should be initiated at least.
In the end, I would just want to
conclude by saying that Each person has her or his own playlist, and they find
it the best. WHY? Because they heard each and every song and decided to put it
in the playlist. A playlist never consists of just one song. A lot of good
songs combined make a great playlist. Life is also like that. No one can make
you choose your goals. You’ll have to set your goals yourself. It Doesn’t have
to be one big goal. A lot of people don’t have that. Start with small goals. As
you achieve them the bigger goal will become visible.
So, find your goal and drown yourself
in it. Keep working and don't stop till emerge on the top. then you will truly succeed.
