A MONOTONOUS LIFE- MYTH OR REALITY

It’s been a long time since I wrote a post. The reason for that is because I had been travelling for the past few days and now I’m back. And while I was travelling, I saw many people who travel on a daily basis for their work. I met a few of my friends who don’t travel at all because of work as they have a desk job, a typical 9-5 or 10-6 job. And almost all of them complain about the monotonous life they have and how they want some change. Then I met a few friends who travel almost daily for work. and they also complained about the same thing. They also complain about the monotonous life they have and how they want some change. This got me thinking that is monotonicity necessary? Is it inevitable?

After a long and deep thought, I figured out that life doesn’t become monotonous ever. It’s just that the rate of change in life keeps varying at different age groups. Most of the people who belong in their twenties or mid thirties get the feeling of being stuck in the same loop of life. And I am sure each one of us has felt the same too. But that might be just a wrong feeling. A temporary phase. An early conclusion.

If we think closely, when we all start our life, we go through a tremendous number of dynamic phases. The journey from childhood to adulthood is so fast paced and it changes almost every day. So, while growing up we get used to this extremely dynamic life. And it is exciting as this age is the age when we learn a lot of new things. But this whole rate of change in our life slows down a little when we enter college. And since this change is small, we sometimes don’t notice it or sometimes choose to be okay with it because it brings new experiences for us. But then this rate of change again decreases but this time it decreases by a big amount when we start working. In the initial phase of working its all exciting because it’s a whole new adventure of life. But as soon as one year or two passes, things start becoming regular or as most of the people call it monotonous. But that is not monotonous. It’s just that our life in that phase is changing very slow. The changes that take place in this phase are visible over a period of months and in some cases even years.
But then we move into another phase of life. That phase can be in the form of marriage or can be in the form of some changes in jobs (switching jobs or choosing the most common path lately of entrepreneurship). The rate of change in life again increases but only to decrease from mid 40s to late 50s.

And then as we enter our old age, the rate of change increases as we deal with the crises of old age. We all have heard of a very famous saying that old age is second childhood. This phrase applies to the monotonous behaviour of life also. Just like in childhood the rate of change in life is tremendous, the same applies for the old age also. You deal with so many changes and a lot of them may not be pleasant. And at that moment you would want your life to be monotonous. Pretty ironic.
So, all in all, life is not monotonous. It may seem so at few moments, but just hold on, the changes in life take their own time to reveal themselves.

Life, in true sense, is a roller coaster. It is full of ups and downs. You can embrace it with open arms and loud cheers or just survive it with arms folded and eyes closed.
I would suggest you choose the former. Because you don’t get to decide when you live or when you die, but you do get to decide how you live. So, control the controllable.

Until next time.
