NEW IS DIFFICULT
Hi everyone. This new post is
coming after a long break now. I was confused among a lot of things to write
on. Some topics were not incomplete in my mind, some were very commonly
explored but then I finally stumbled on something and it has been a recurring
thought. And it Is related to change.
Newness. How do we perceive it? How do we accept it? How does it help?
Think about the time when you
were in school and multiplication was introduced for the first time. Was it
easy? For a few people it was. But for most of the people around me, it wasn’t.
But now if we think about multiplication, it seems like such an easy task that
we can do while doing other things too. It was a new concept back when we were
a kid. It seemed difficult. But did we have a choice to give up on it? No. we
didn’t and maybe that we didn’t have a choice ensured that we understood it
properly. And after we understood it completely, it became easier for us and it
sort of lost its value. Why? Because we humans generally value something only
till the time we don’t get it or only till we are trying to achieve it. Once we
get it, that whole thing loses its value. I realised these many times. E.g. When
I was preparing for the college entrances, getting an admit into my college felt
like a dream, but as soon as I entered the whole thing lost its value very quickly.
Most of us exhibit this nature. It is applicable to almost everything. It can
be good and constructive but can be not so good in some instances.
When, after we become adults, we
try to take up a new thing to learn, we initially try to shy away from it. We
find reasons to avoid it or try to do things without using that new thing. But
why does it even happen? Partly because our ability to learn new things reduces
with age. But not to the extent that we think it does. We just have the liberty
of giving up now which in the younger years we sort of didn’t. But if you are
consistent enough in learning something new, sooner or later you will get it. For
instance, I have taught so many students who were very weak in maths since
forever. But when they started studying it sincerely they achieved very good
marks.
And this difficulty of learning something new is not just applicable to academics. it's also applicable in various other things. e.g. moving to a new place to live or starting a new job etc.
So yes, learning something new can be
difficult, and sometimes it is very difficult, but if you are consistent
enough, you will definitely get it and that will make you truly stand out. That
dedication is what makes a difference. That is what separates a winner from a
loser. I once read a very nice quote “difference
between a teacher and a student is that the teacher failed the number of times
the student tried”.
So, keep learning and keep
growing. And always remember that knowledge is the most valuable asset.
